Tribal Art Auction with Special Catalogue
The two-volume catalogue for the 86th Tribal Art Auction on the 27th of May is now available.
There are 500 good reasons not to miss this auction. Excellent works of art from five continents, three private collections as well as one institution in the tribal art market.
We have put together objects from three German collector generations: Walter Schmidt (special catalogue) as well as Ludwig Leicher and Berhard Jäger. They are part of an extensive collection of fine old art from Africa, North America, Asia and Oceania.
This very old 'moai tangata' figure from the Easter Islands (Lot 86), formerly in the Museum Godeffroy in Hamburg (1861 to 1885), later in the collections of Carl A. Pöhl (1883), probably Walter Bondy (1880-1940) and Ludwig Leicher (1895- 1963), has an exciting collection history.

Volume 1: The Africa Collection of Walter Schmidt
We have devoted a special catalogue to the Walter Schmidt African collection. He belongs to the young tribal-art collector generation, which emerged in the post-war Germany of the 1950s. Dr. Karl-Ferdinand Schädler published parts of his collection in 1973 in his pioneering publication »African Art in Private German Collections«. We are therefore delighted that Dr. Schädler, an institution in the tribal art market for many years, will be present for the preview at the auction on Saturday. One more reason to visit to Wurzburg !
