Art collections reflect the passion and commitment of the collector in a special way. This frequently quoted sentence applies particularly to artist collections as we know them from art history to contemporary art - collections of non-European art as a stimulus and input for one‘s own artistic creation.
The Piet Lepelaar collection, the first part of which we auctioned off in April of this year, is undoubtedly one of them. The artist and designer from Leiden in the Netherlands is known for his imaginative, robotic figures and constructions. He finds inspiration in Oceanic art with all its “amazing shapes and colours”, as he puts it, and in the powerful, expressive figures and masks of Africa. Here and there he encounters a “very unique, inherent aesthetic”, as is also reflected in his works.
In the past few decades, a collection of African and Oceanic art has been created that is well-known and valued among connoisseurs, which already attracted a lot of attention in the first part (auction 96 on April 24, 2021).
