"Tecciztli" shell trumpets are among the oldest instruments in Mesoamerica. Their deep tones were heard at ceremonies, religious festivals, human sacrifices and the mortification of priests. Snails had a high symbolic and material value. Because of their close connection to the basic element of water, they were a symbol of birth and procreation.
